Role that early detection plays in fighting breast cancer

A friend of mine was recently diagnosed with an early stage of breast cancer. I can only imagine how awful she must be feeling, how scared and confused. I have tried talking to her about it but she just shuts down, she is still in shock and she does not even want to hear the word breast cancer used in relation with her person. The `positive side of this story is that the cancer was discovered at an early stage so it will not be very hard to treat with chemotherapy and surgery and she has incredibly high chances of surviving.

The doctor discovered the cancer while practicing a routine mammography test; he said that he immediately felt a lump on the outer side of her right breast so he sent for more tests to be performed thru ultrasound and X ray machines. Effectively, there was a small lump the size of a pea which was developing on the right breast of my friend, the lump was cancerigenous. There is already a scheduled date for surgery, much needed to remove the unwanted lump and for the beginning of chemotherapy. The doctor has told is that it is normal for cancer patients to fall into a state of shock and disbelief during the first days or weeks of their diagnose, he also told us that when my friend finally accepted that she was suffering from breast cancer she would need our unconditional support.
